Miley Cyrus attributes many of her positive personality traits to her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, but there is one she's not so fond of.
The "Flowers" star sat down with David Letterman as part of the latest episode of his Netflix series, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, to discuss sobriety, child stardom, and the Cyrus family dynamic.
Letterman, drawing from the father-daughter duo that we've seen on screen all these years, asked the singer if Billy Ray was her "hero," to which she replied, "I mean, honestly, my mom is my hero." Despite greater admiration for her mother, Tish Cyrus, the Hannah Montana alum still has "lots of love" for her dad and is grateful for how he contributed to her success and her "perspective and reality on life."
According to Entertainment Tonight, Tish and Billy Ray divorced in 2022 after nearly three decades of raising six children together. Both have since went on to marry "new partners" amid rumors that a few of Miley's siblings have grown "estranged" from their father. Miley believes that the way her parents were raised had something to do with the way that she was raised by each parent, in that her mom, adopted by a loving family as a baby, had a "spoiled childhood," and Billy Ray did not.
"My dad had a really rough childhood, and my childhood - I mean we can go and talk about the hard times or the struggles...but I had food, I had love, I grew up in a big beautiful house, and my dad didn't have that." While the "Wrecking Ball" standout credits Tish for making her the "woman she is today" (per Entertainment Tonight), she finds immeasurable comfort in her dad's creative side.
"Without my dad I know...who I am as a person wouldn't exist. Because my dad, as a creative like me, as an artist like me, and the way his brain works has always made me feel safer in my own mind."
She continued:
"He also has a relationship and a foot on the ground to nature and to the real. And he always did even when he was super famous. I am grateful for being able to watch him ahead of me. He's almost like - given me this map. There is a map of what to do and what not to do and he's guided me on both."
Though the "Malibu" songstress is thankful for the creative traits that she inherited from Billy Ray, there is one characteristic she does not speak so highly of.
"I also inherited narcissism from my father. I don't know anything about my own siblings except the part I was doing...I was moving to L.A. and that's all I really knew."
